To serve and protect…Bank of America
Back from the US Uncut NYC protest, which I posted a write-up of here. I witnessed an interesting interaction inside Bank of America whilst reporting on the day of action. My cameraman, Zach Roberts, and I followed US Uncut organizer Duncan Meisel into the bank to watch him deliver a fake check to the teller. The fake checks represent what Bank of America should have paid in taxes during 2009 ($1.5 billion). Here’s what happened:
Is that a rule now? If a citizen doesn’t produce his/her ID in a timely fashion, are cops allowed to physically assault them? Also, both Meisel and Roberts actually are Bank of America customers. Is this how BoA treats customers who wish to object to the company’s policies? And last question: are the police now the guardians of BoA instead of tax-funded sentinels charged with protecting the liberties (like free speech) of citizens?
Various matters
I’ve been blogging over at The Nation about all of this US Uncut business. The most recent post can be read here, and the rest are available in the archive:
US Uncut Adds Verizon and FedEx to its Target List
Everyone Has a Stake in US Uncut’s Fight
Yesterday, I appeared on GRITtv with a very-much-kidding (please don’t send me emails asking if he’s for real) J.A. Myerson:
And perhaps most importantly (I don’t just mean relatively speaking when it comes to my news, but for all of humanity’s news, ever,) my friend Ian Murphy is running for Congress. You might remember him from that time he horrifically offended you with his profane manifesto in the Buffalo Beast, or from that other time he pwned Scott Walker. Anyway, feed your face this:
For all of you weak liberals out there who watched this and are all, “Hey, he looks crazy. I’m not voting for him.” Ask yourselves this: C’mon. How much worse could things get? Eh?
The man behind the epic Walker takedown, dispatches from Egypt, US Uncut NYC
Listen to the new Citizen Radio and subscribe to the free podcast.
Interviews with Ian Murphy from the Buffalo Beast about his epic prank of Gov. Walker, journalist Austin Mackell (@austingmackell) about the evolution of Egypt’s revolution, and Allison plays audio from the US Uncut NYC protest, which includes an interview with Jonathan Tasini, an activist and organizer who challenged New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand in the Democratic primary for the 2010 Senate special election.
Also, Jamie shares stories from Toronto involving pot, old women, and a suspicious pool table.
Citizen Radio will be in Austin March 2-5, and Citizen Radio Live! with Sarah Silverman, Only Son, and a SUPER MASSIVE musical guest is March 11. Get tix here. Totally no pressure, but it’s the month of Allison’s birth, and if you don’t come out to support the shows, she’ll hate you forever.

US Uncut Hits the Streets
Here’s my report for The Nation about a US Uncut rally I attended today in NYC at Madison Square Garden.
Journalist Johann Hari on corporate tax dodgers and dispatches from Wisconsin’s union protest
Listen to the new Citizen Radio and subscribe to the free podcast.
Journalist Johann Hari talks UK Uncut, US Uncut, and decides who he’d rather fight: David Cameron or Nick Clegg. Also, Godless Maniac Joseph Thoennes reports from Madison, Wisconsin about the protests and spirit of solidarity in the Capitol.
Beforehand, Allison and Jamie dispell some myths about the Wisconsin protests and unions, and offer some advice about how to stick to your Progressive ideals when your friends are being little assholes about it.
Much like Tunisia’s influence on Egypt, the spirit of Wisconsin appears to be spreading with the murmurs of uprising in Indiana due to some deceptively named “right to work” legsilation.
