Response to Glen Ford at Black Agenda Report

without comments

Glen Ford over at Black Agenda Report took issue with my report on the Occupy Wall Street protest in Harlem. Well, “took issue” is a nice way of saying, “Calls me a southern white racist.” Anywho, I responded via email. Hopefully, he’ll post the response at BAR. If not, enjoy reading it here!

Hey Glen-

Caught your blog post and wanted to have a chance to respond. Hopefully, you’ll post this at Black Agenda Report.

The first aspect of my article you seem to take issue with is the the turnout I reported. I’m not sure what media outlet is reporting 400 individuals were there, but that estimate is way too high. An estimate of a couple hundred people is more accurate, albeit still generous.

Regardless, the count is a secondary issue when compared to your main beef: the erroneous claim that I stated Occupy Wall Street should “stay away from Harlem.” This is, quite simply, false. I never wrote that.

What I did say is that OWS did a poor job of outreach in Harlem, and I stand by that. All I can convey to my readers is what I witnessed first hand, and that was several tense conflicts between Harlem residents and the Larouche followers. Again, all I convey is what I saw happen, and that was many passersby expressing anger at the image of Obama-as-Hitler paraded around by the Larouchies.

The result was mass confusion. Occupy’s productive messages about Stop And Frisk and NDAA were lost in the circus created by the Larouchies. Again, not Occupy’s fault (I attempted to explain in the article that it’s not as simple as Occupy banning the Larouchies because they’ve been part of the movement since the beginning,) but I had to report what actually happened.

The claim that I spoke as an “old school southern white racist” is libelous. Simply because I attempted to report on larger cultural trends in Harlem (the gentrification, institutional racism in things like subprime mortgages and Stop And Frisk) doesn’t mean I think that Occupy should be, as you again erroneously state, “segregated.”

As I’m sure you know, Occupy is a diverse movement, and I don’t claim otherwise in the article. The only point I made is that, at this particular protest, it was comprised of majority-white individuals.

I have to report what I actually saw, and that was a group of majority-white individuals show up to the Apollo Theater protest, some of whom carried an Obama-as-Hitler poster, which angered many Harlem residents. That doesn’t mean I “want a segregated Occupy.” As a reporter, I’m not in the habit of telling Occupy what to do at all. My beat is more of a “Here’s what went down” thing.

I would hope we can disagree on stuff like protest counts and Occupy’s strategies without resorting to name-calling and vicious libel in the future.

Best,

Allison Kilkenny
