Peter King’s McCarthy act, union-busting in Wisconsin, tribute to Mike DeStefano

with 2 comments

Listen to the new Citizen Radio and subscribe to the free podcast.

Peter King ushers in a new shameful period by harassing the Muslim community. Jamie and Allison discuss this travesty, and also the one highlight from King’s hearing: Keith Ellison’s moving testimonial. The GOP in Wisconsin have stripped unions of the right to collectively bargain, and now there are rumors of an impending general strike. The ruling will be challenged in court, and the decision places new importance on the upcoming Supreme Court battle between David Prosser (R) and JoAnn Kloppenberg (D).

Labor journalist Mike Elk reports on Gov. Walker’s alleged “concessions,” and the Shock Doctrine at work in Wisconsin. Also, Michael Moore visited the protesters in Wisconsin to offer them words of encouragement. Finally, Jamie talks about his friend, comic Mike DeStefano, who recently died.

It’s not racism when we say and do racist things

Remember how the movement to ban Muslims from gathering in Lower Manhattan is really a movement to preserve the sanctity of titty bars protect the hallowed shrine of Ground Zero, and is not – at all!- tied to Islamophobia?

Yeah:

Imam Abdullah Salem arrived at the Madera Islamic Center on Tuesday to find a pair of menacing signs, including one that read “Wake up America, the enemy is here.”

It was the latest in a series of incidents that the Madera County Sheriff’s Department is investigating as hate crimes. On Sunday, a brick nearly smashed a window at the center on Road 26 just outside Madera. Last week, another sign left on the property read “No temple for the god of terrorism.”

It goes without saying that the designer of this sign (it’s being credited to the American Nationalist Brotherhood) obviously has no concept of religious freedom, tolerance, or even the history of New York (Lower Manhattan used to be called Little Syria due to its thriving Arab population). And of course, Islam didn’t attack America on 9/11 – it was the action of a small group of religious extremists.

The sudden fixation on the Park 51 cultural center has nothing to do with the existential threat of ‘them turrists stealin our freedums’ and everything to do with racism, bigotry, and religious intolerance. Of course, if you point out this extremely obvious reality to a red-faced, cardboard sign-waving paranoid, they come down with a case of the vapors.

Where is the unhallowed ground?

Mike Blake/Reuters

A few days ago, I (along with Citizen Radio co-host Jamie Kilstein) debated a pair of Conservatives at a show run by comedian Scott Blakeman. The contentious topic of discussion was – surprise, surprise – the Cordoba House. The Conservatives’ reoccurring claim was that Ground Zero is hallowed ground – a familiar talking point to anyone who has been following the news.

Of course, I pointed out that the Cordoba House is not a mosque – it’s actually a cultural center – more like a YMCA, and that it’s not at Ground Zero. The Cordoba House would be located in Lower Manhattan where there are already two other mosques. But these facts didn’t really make a dent. The Conservatives kept coming back to this claim that Lower Manhattan – all of it, not just Ground Zero – is somehow “hallowed ground.”

This mock piety is really a cover for Islamophobia. Time and again, the Conservatives reiterated that Islam is a radical, violent religion, and they kept asking where the moderate Muslims were to protest the extremist behavior displayed on 9/11. Ironically, the group proposing the Cordoba house is one of the moderate groups. The community center would have invited people of all races and religions to use their facilities – something radical extremists frown upon.

And there are lots of moderate Muslim groups. To name only a few: the World Organization for Resource Development and Education (WORDE), Center for Eurasian Policy at the Hudson Institute Farid Ghadry, Reform Party of Syria Manda Zand Ervin, Alliance of Iranian Women, The Center for Democracy and Human Rights in Saudi Arabia, Arab Reformists Project, American Islamic Forum for Democracy, and Inter-Religious Affairs for the Islamic Supreme Council of America. These groups met last year with Rep. Sue Myrick for the expressed purpose of “stamping out extremism” in their communities and around the world.

But despite the existence of these groups, the Conservatives kept demanding a Million Muslim March upon the White House to prove their devotion to the U. S. of A. I suggested a purity test. They didn’t seem amused. I asked what the quota of “Good Muslims” is – the magical number of moderate groups it would take to soothe their nerves. Again, they didn’t seem to have a specific number in mind.
