Robert Gibbs: The most honest man in Washington

Today, Press Secretary Robert Gibbs really let his asshole colors fly when he teed off on the “professional Left,” whoever that is. According to Gibbs, the irrational leftist fringe losers he had in mind are the people who would like affordable healthcare and a smidge less war.

The press secretary dismissed the “professional left” in terms very similar to those used by their opponents on the ideological right, saying, “They will be satisfied when we have Canadian healthcare and we’ve eliminated the Pentagon. That’s not reality.”

Of those who complain that Obama caved to centrists on issues such as healthcare reform, Gibbs said: “They wouldn’t be satisfied if Dennis Kucinich was president.”

And also..

“I hear these people saying he’s like George Bush. Those people ought to be drug tested,” Gibbs said. “I mean, it’s crazy.”

Thank you. I’m so sick of watching all these nampy pamby lefties – in their damned KUCINICH FOR EMPEROR t-shirts – alternating between sucking their thumbs, chewing mushrooms, and asking the president they helped elect to keep his campaign promises.

Of course, now Gibbers is offering a cocktail of excuses as to why he said these awful things. He’s sick (he has the sniffles!) and also, he so totally wasn’t even talking about Progressives. He was talking about teevee personalities…who notoriously love Kucinich…and hate the Pentagon. I remember all of those times we Internet folk had to talk down Chris Matthews from propagandizing about his love for Kucinich (“Butch,” Chris calls him,) and how he thinks war funds should be redirected to funding infrastructure and paying teachers.

For many reasons, these statements were misleading, inaccurate, offensive, and stupid. Greenwald, as usual, does a great job of publicly destroying Gibbers. Digby concurs, and also points out that everyone in Washington hates liberals. I think this is an important point to remember. Sure, what Gibbs said was shitty and wrong, but at least he was honest and attached his name and face to his derisive tantrum. As Greenwald points out, normally all we get is “anonymous White House official” sources attached to pathetically cowardly quotes about those damned Progressives – whose votes the White House totally needs – who also completely ruin everything, but who officials would really like to see turn out in November!

Rahm Emanuel is a notorious lefty-basher, who called Progressives “fucking stupid” for daring to challenge Blue Dogs on healthcare reform. President Obama himself dismisses Progressives at every chance by exalting the importance of “looking forward, not backward” at the unpleasantness of war crimes, illegal detentions, and domestic spying. By embracing this denialism, Obama explicitly dissed Progressives, who have this crazy idea that “looking backward” really means “obtaining justice,” which is deeply essential to their movement.

What we always hear is that Obama has to do this because only 20 percent of the country identifies as liberal. But as Digby points out, the real concern is who Independents vote for (only 30 percent of the country identifies as conservative,) so why does the White House assume those Independents want to see Progressives get the snot kicked out of them by the Press Secretary? Maybe – and this is a really far out idea — those Independents want to see Washington pass bills that help poor people and the unemployed, and don’t perpetuate meaningless wars for centuries to come.

Eh, but it’s much easier to close the Oval Office doors and snigger about all those queer Progressive activists. At least Gibbs was man enough to attach his name to the insults, although now he appears to be wildly backpeddling since Rahm didn’t rush to his side and spit, “Yeah! And youz guys is ugly, too!”

Didn’t know you were a “Professional liberal.” Obama bashing starts at 5:30a.m. and continues until 10pm on MSNBC each day (it’s called the Left channel ironically). Really think that’s who he was talking about.

Tweety & Rachel are the exception. Rachel attempts to offer constructive criticism–not over-the-top attacks which really are not effective.

I’m really going to need examples to respond to that. Are we talking about the famed Obama-basher Joe Scarborough? And I don’t recall Keith Olbermann or Dylan Ratigan pimping Kucinich…ever.
